Beethoven

We all know that Bob liked Beethoven more than Mozart (which seems to demonstrate his good taste in music).

So, any other's feel the same? Listening to music (as in: sitting in a chair and really listening as opposed to passively hearing music as a distraction) brings great joy to my life. What are your favorite Beethoven recordings?

A few of mine are:
-Symphony #9 (the 1942 recording conducted by Furtwangler and remastered in 1999 by Maggi Payne; Music & Arts CD 4653)
-Symphony #6 (the Harnoncourt recording on Teldec)
-Symphony #5 and #7 (obviously the Kleiber on DG, is there any other choice?)
-Archduke and Ghost Trios (performed on period instruments by Immerseed, Beths, and Bylsma: Sony SK 51353)
-Sonatas (Walstein, Les Adieux, and Appassionata by Emil Gilels; DG 419 162-2)
-Piano Concertos 1-5 (Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Nikolaus Harnoncourt; Teldec 0927 47334-2)
-Of course I'd have to add: the Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II (the one comissioned by members of the Bavarian Illuminata when Beethoven was only 19 years of age; my favorite is the Hyperion release conducted by Matthew Best; CDA66880).
-The newest recording of the 5th piano concerto by Helene Grimaud coupled with sonata 28 on DG sounds incredible to my ears!

I'm sure some of you have favorites as well. I don't know why, but for some reason (not based on any evidence) I picture Bob listening to the Karajan recordings.

Robert Anton Wilson once said in his book:
Quantum Psychology (pages 140-141)

. . . According to Brain/Mind Bulletin (May 1988) John Barefoot
of Duke University has found a negative correlation
between suspiciousness and longevity. In a sample of 500
older men and women whose health he monitored for 15
years, Barefoot discovered that:

(a) those who scored high on suspiciousness, cynicism
and hostility died sooner than all others;
(b) this high mortality among those with Loser Scripts
remained constant when compared by age, by sex, by
previous health, by diet and even by "bad habits." (Those
who smoked and remained generally optimistic lived
longer than those who smoked and worried about it.)
(c) those who scored highest on hostility had a death rate
more than six times higher than others.

. . . In a related study (Brain/Mind Bulletin August 1988)
Shelley Taylor of UCLA and Jonathan Brown of SMU
refuted the conventional idea that those who score high on
"mental health" have fewer illusions than others.

. . . Quite the reverse, according to this study: those who
score high on "mental health" generally have a number of
illusory beliefs. Among the most common illusions of the
mentally healthy:

(a) overly positive views of themselves;
(b) convenient "forgetting" of negative facts about
themselves;

(d) "unrealistic" optimism about themselves;
(e) "unrealistic" optimism about the future in general;
(f) "abnormal" cheerfulness.

. . . Would you want to have those kinds of "illusions" or
would you rather stick to "hard realism" and die sooner

The Crowley-Korzybski connection

I just read the following from Crowley's "Magick Without Tears":

"When we wish to exchange thoughts, we must arrange a conventional code of sounds, of knots in string, or carved or written characters-- in a word -- embark upon the boundless ocean of heiroglyphics or symbols of one sort or another (Presently I shall have to explain the supreme importance of such systems, in fact, the Universe is not, and cannot be, but an arrrangement of symbolic characters!)."

Now, we see that Crowley used of the "is" of identity in stating that "the Universe is not" in a negative manner; he "reversed" the "is" of identify. This koan-like utterance of his seems to preclude Korzbyski's "consciousness of abstracting. As I then looked upon the Tree of Life diagram, it seemed that the paths up from Malkuth to Kether could be seen as the process of becoming conscious of abstracting. Anyway, what came upon me was the possible importance of RITUAL in our lives (I don't presently practice any religious rituals). If we agree that Universe reveals itself through symbol systems (including our nervous system's attempts at evaluating the internal and external environenments that we experience) then perhaps the use of conscious ritual could be of benefit in gaining understanding of Universe. Just a thought.

I feel that Korzbski related the truths of the Buddha in way that most Westerners could realize as I relate "awakening" to being "conscious of abstracting". Anybody else here make a connection between Korzybski and the Tree of Life? I'm open to any and all criticism to the Crowley-Korzybski connection.

In no way am I implying or suggesting that Korzybski has any knowledge of Crowley or Buddhism, but I find the connections interesting.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

RAW fan needs help in Seattle.

Hello. I'd like to make this as brief as possible, but I don't know how brief I can make it.

I'm 28 years old, and I've been married for five months to the woman of my dreams, who out of nowhere, kicked me out and filed for divorce. Her reasons for divorce seem absurd to me. Especially since she's divorcing me after 5 months. Her lawyer even said, "I've known this family for years, and Les, she wasn't ready. She wanted to be ready, but she wasn't." That seems more clear than any other explanation I can give, other than to say that I never cheated on her, never called her a bad name, never stole from her, never yelled at her, and so on. In fact, she didn't like me smoking, so I quit smoking. She didn't like it if I drank beer, so I stopped drinking beer. I did everything she asked me to do. I will add that she lived with her extremely strict parents her whole life, (23 years,) and lived a totally different reality than me, until she moved out when we got married.

Anyway, I gave her everything I had, all my money, all my attention, etc. The bills and rent I helped pay for, I can no longer use. She has effectively rendered me homeless. So, a friend of mine in Seattle said that I could just fly up and stay with her, and so I started selling what belongings I had left, and got a plane ticket to Seattle for Christmas Eve. But evidently, she found some reason to stop talking to me out of nowhere, whether it was her ex, or her friends, or something.

So, here I sit, in Seattle, lucky enough to have found a good samaritan to give me a place to stay for a week or so, but after that, I'm on my own. I got two jobs that both start after new years.

Does anyone out there in Seattle have a couch I can crash on for a month while I pick back up my life? I can provide you any reference you need to show that I am not a criminal or a con. I just don't want to be homeless. Also, since you like Robert Anton Wilson, and I like Robert Anton Wilson, I suspect there might be some pretty good conversations.

general semantics

i'm not sure how many people have read 'science and sanity' by korzybski, even with the amount of times raw has reccomended it. but if anyone has embarked on a study of it, or is about to, i reccomend the site i have placed below as a good starting point to understand the basics of general semantics. it has reccomendations for further reading, seemingly objective essays on the parts of it that are relevant and those that have become irrelevent.

Ralph Kenyon seems to have a real understanding of the intent of General Semantics, and how it should be constantly applied to itself so as not to become a dogma - through stagnation. he also seems to understand a lot of other sciences that are important for the study of general semantics.

if you were to contribute to an altar to bob, what would you want to see/be there? what memes make you think of r.a.w.? the conference is mostly about ethnogens, but i want to express something about his kindness, straight forwardness, and non paranoia mixed in with how he dealt with people who visit non-ordinary reality and altered state consciousness. cuz he talks about meditation and the dismissal of E-prime ( semantics, nlp) as tools capable of bringing upon altered states too. he was one of the contemporary thinkers who demonstrated and acknowledged that not all altered states are brought on by chemicals created outside the human body. his writing dealt with our own bath of chemicals that we create in ourselves too, but then again if you want to keep to the theme of the conference, its about contemporary perspectives on psychedelics. if you have any friends that want to give feedback please do fwd this.

I came across a passage by Wilhelm Reich that resonates true today, as it did in 1953 when he wrote it, as it did 2000 years ago from which he referenced it. The passage is from the book “The Murder of Christ”, and is as follows:

“This is the way it has been and has remained to this very day and will go on being for quite some time. They will not cease to kill this way until they have been rendered powerless to kill the soul in every human fruit already in the womb before it saw the light of day.

They will kill Jesus Christ for a crime they themselves imputed, they themselves invented, they themselves committed a thousand times; a crime Christ never dreamed of, never was close to, never possibly could have concocted.” (Wilhelm Reich: The Murder of Christ, p.87, The Noonday Press, New York, sixth printing, 1971)

Countless scholars throughout history have shared this message. The message is simple: The ruling class have persecuted and crucified all who have dared to challenge their power. The oligarchy have been able to do this by manipulating the masses through fear, misinformation, and by placing slaves in positions of power to do their bidding.

Bill Hicks paraphrased this passage during his performances with his “it’s just a ride” routine. He, like Reich, prophesized his persecution. Both men were wise enough to see the folly of our choices as a society and both knew themselves well enough to choose freedom rather then conformity.

Both these men highlighted the fact that we have been blinded by our apathy and have forfeited our freedoms by accepting our bondage of ignorance. Their words refer to those that we have sacrificed, and to those that we continue to sacrifice, to maintain the status quo, even though it paves the way for our destruction. From innocent women burned at the stake, to the assassination of those of us who have been brave enough to speak a truth that is plainly visible to all, but hidden from our conscience.

The most recent victim of our collective is one, Marc Emery. Like Reich, the ruling class has branded Emery as one of its greatest adversaries. The reason that Mr. Emery is considered to be such a danger to the Empire is because he is, just like Reich was. The philosophy of both these men threatens the status quo, hence the witch-hunt. Reich’s words in the above passage can easily be re-written as follows:

“They will kill Marc Emery for a crime they themselves imputed, they themselves invented, they themselves committed a thousand times; a crime Emery never dreamed of, never was close to, never possibly could have concocted”

If collectively we, as a society, begin to realize that our attempts are futile in waging a war on nature, then the elite would no longer control us. We would be free. The ultimate question is, are we ready to govern our lives as if we were children of God the way Christ would want us to do, or are we about to crucify another innocent?

New Tribe for those interested in current sciences and Thelema

we know so much more now that can be applied to "Scientific Illuminism" . This is a place to discuss this evolving world-view completely outside of the context of lineages, groups, orders or related historical disputes.
My ulterior motive for starting this tribe is that i want to update my own limited understanding of these fields of knowledge, and benefit from the brilliant and studied minds that pass through these spheres.

The latest crop circle hub bub

Over at Reality Sandwich, there is a fair bit of discussion going on regarding the most recent crop circle, which is said to be the Mayan symbol for "6"

According to Pinchbeck's comment on the post, *something* should happen today on 8/18 and makes a comparison to a past crop circle that a had date spelled out in planetary orbits. Other comments range from some variety of believer to agnostic.

What do you think?

Will something significant happen? Is this all just New Age hysteria? If some event does coincide with the current interpretation of the crop circle, does that mean the two are linked in some manner? Would it be an arbitrary neurological grid? A synchronicity? Just damned weird?

If nothing significant occurs, does that mean that the author of the above article is delusional? or did he just misinterpret data and construct a model that didn't work? Or is the artist behind the circles (who or whatever it is) just stirring the pot with the latest creation to see what interpretations people come up with? (sounds like a Discordian conspiracy to me ^_^)

RAW Drug

Didn't know where else to ask this question since this seems to be the only place where RAW fans have congregated in some numbers.

I was wondering if any of you know the name of the psychotherapeutic drug that RAW mentioned in the 27th minute of his lecture "Perennial questions and Current Answers" available from soundphotosynthesis. It sounds something like Atem or Atom, but I can find no information on it.

Help...if anybody knows the answer..

I finished the book in January, and although I have meant to, I have stalled in getting another RAW book to read....

should I just move on to the second Volume.....or is there another book which others would recommend I read instead?

Advances in Quantum Computing: Evolution in Thought - Maybe Logic

This is the second major news release this year regarding this technology. On February 13 a Canadian firm unveiled what it called "the world's first commercially viable quantum computer."

If we are close to developing quantum computing abilities then we may have a major breakthrough in human evolution. At present all computers function on a Yes or No basis (0 or 1). I still don't know what to think about this whole 23 business...is it just a neurological grid? Do I only notice certain events that fit nicely with what I've been told is the number's meaning and ignore others? Is it something more than this? I don't know, but it's hitting a little too close to home lately:

My grandmother's wake was this past April 23rd. Also in the wee hours of that morning, the company my brother and his wife work for was sold. They might lose their jobs. Hexagram 23: Things Fall Apart. Strange...or perhaps only so because of a pattern that I'm imposing...a pattern to notice chaos...heh. Despite these sobering events, I can't help but find humor in this paradox.

On a lighter note, last month I did a little double take, as I went to the lab to deonate the requisite bodily fluids for a long overdue physical. The lab has a deli-like numbering system. Much like RAW and his ancedote about the pizza place, the ticket I took was number 23 (though thankfully there were no entropic consequences to follow).

Maybe I should stick another number in my grid for a month and take some notes. Or maybe I need to take a break with some good gut busting comedy. I found reading "Make Your Own Damn Movie" while also reading "Undoing Yourself With Energized Meditation" to be a nice balance. After getting stoned, watching Twin Peaks, and continuing reading Cosmic Trigger Volume 2 within the last 12 hours, I think this might be a good course of action.

My question is, if you had to pick one translation , which one would you pick? There are a staggering amount of translations out there and for someone's first read it's hard to decide which one to go with. My favorite is Regardies "Eye in the Triangle" but I don't think this would be a good book for somebody who knows little about Crowley. Are there any new bios that are any good? How I Met Robert Anton Wilson

I met Bob in 1979 and was privvy to a series of meetings with him and his friends at the Discordian salons he and his wife Arlen hosted at their SF area homes in the early eighties. Since hearing of the shocking news of Bob's rapidly decllning health, I have started writing a series of brief chapters on the changes in my life surrounding and following that initial meeting. A couple of years ago I had a chance to meet RAW personally. I'd purchased a copy of "The Sex Magicians" on ebay and a friend of his had contacted me wanting to purchase the book with the intention of giving it to RAW as a gift. I replied that I would be happy to give it to him myself and that no payment would be necessary. Upon presenting R.A.W. with the book I let him know that I'd made a digital copy (for myself) and asked him whether he intended to have the book published again in the future. He wasn't sure if the rights to the book still resided with the original publisher (I believe they're out of business) or not but in any case he asked me to make this story available to the public via the internet. I've been waiting to do so, just in case he changed his mind and wanted to have the book published, but obviously that's no longer a possibility. He wanted you all to have it. Numbers and the Coincidence Network

Warning, long post with little substance ahead...

Funny stuff, both funny ha-ha and funny peculiar. It all started after reading Cosmic Trigger Vol. 1, I started to notice the number 420 seemingly popping up everywhere I looked. One of the classic examples I remember was when I was talking to someone on Yahoo Messenger (where incidently, is where I had met the person who first turned me on to RAW and Cosmic Trigger, years ago, in a hip hop chat room of all places. Nuns have more sex then I spend time in a hip hop chat room on Yahoo.). I was talking to some hussie and the messenger had informed me that "the last message was recieved at 4:20". No big deal, but as I got up to leave the room and turned to the TV, the cameraman at a baseball game thought that was the perfect time to zoom up to the outfield wall, and show the length of the field, 420, plastered in big bold lettering on the wall. This guy then thought it was a good idea to ZOOOOM until the number 420 took up the entire screen, while the announcers were saying "yep..420..thats the size of it" , and other insane things that I can't remember. A "tripple whammy" as the great RAW would say.

Another example, my mom had told me that HGTV (or whatever the hell) was giving away a 'dreamhouse', if you entered some contest online. Said "dreamhouse" was located in Winter Park, Colorado, on the slopes of a popular ski resort. I remember some minor discussion about coincidence (not pertaining to anything important) and I left the room and went upstairs. I went in my own room, turned on the TV, and the news was on, talking about a massive avalanche in WINTER PARK COLORADO. If only that was the weirdest part, ha ha. I looked at the clock (instinctively, almost), and sure enough..5:20. I was too lazy to set my clock to the proper time for daylight savings time, and would always just subtract an hour from whatever the clock said to get the right time. 4:20, right on the dot.

This one is probably the cosmic cake taker. I was having a discussion with someone about the usual crazy things one talks about when they talk about crazy things, and somehow the bible got involved. I decided to pull out this Beast and read a little, seeing if I could make any sense of it; something I hadn't done since the last time I was in church, uhhh, about 10 or more years ago. I flipped to Revelations (the good shit) and was skimming through verses. Not only did my eyes instantly attract to the damn verse that RAW had quoted in the book, which, at the time, I didn't even remember was in the damn book, (The verse was something about.."only he with the mark of the beast shall be able to trade and aquire food"..you know the one I'm talking about), but a few moments later the words (or numbers) FOUR AND TWENTY leaped at my eyeballs with fishooks and dragged them to the page. Apparently "four and twenty elders sat on four and twenty seats before the throne", and some other nonsense about a beast reigning 42 years, and a few more 'four and twenty's' thrown in for good measure. If one would say for certain these coincidences meaned anything, they could probably drive themselves to a "nice home with pleasant nurses"..or however RAW said it.

By even weirder circumstances, I came to find out that a book had been written involving the number 42, talking some mess about how it was the ultimate answer to the universe and life, "Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy". The weird circumstances behind this were, well..weird. I was watching a video on Youtube (something I do now and then) and the person I was watching had their TV turned up loud in the background. I had made out a question from some English game show (they had English accents, anyway), that asked "in this novel, blah blah blah, which number is the ultimate answer to the universe? 22..32..or 42?" The loser answered 22, sorry, wrong answer..correct answer was 42. This led me to a google search of 42 ultimate answer universe which brought me to that book (which I haven't read yet), where in fact some machine says "the ultimate answer to life and the universe is....42"

These "whatever-the-hell-they-ares" seem to happen more when someone is 'wrapped up' in it all, and in the strangest damn ways (reading a bible which I haven't done for years, hearing a game show question in the background of a video, meeting strange characters on messaging systems that I spend about 30 minutes a year on). I never heard of Mckenna's "cosmic giggle" theory, and still haven't (I just read the words in a post on here earlier), but I've been calling it that since it has been happening. It's almost like little elves in the background of space and time, playfully throwing you a ball of coincidence and hoping you will throw it back. Or some kind of unknown 'force', most likely (and most sanely) part of our own consciousness, clueing us in to 'keep going'. Kind of like a real life Celestine Prophecy novel (which interestingly, I read after Cosmic Trigger, not even knowing what it was about, and seemed to agree with the 'process' I was noticing).

If I really look back over the past 5 years, so many strange ass coincidences have led me to this spot where I'm sitting right now, and pretty much set me on a path of thinking for myself, or trying to anyway. I don't even know what the purpose of this post is...just to type it I guess. I'm hoping someone has been noticing the same things. Has this happened to anyone else? Has anyone been paying attention? Sorry for the long post

feeling the spirit, being moved "knowing deep down that jesus is real" etc

what can be said about these dynamics.

matters of the heart?

feeling the holy spirit telling us "jesus really is real?"

this to me seems like the only proof of a religions validity.

the ideathat jesus died for you resonates with people deep down (myself included, unfortunately)

i never really examined when it resonated with me.

I was confirmed in church in 8th grade.

I sung songs in a youth choir

"jesus is the truth! and the truth shall set you free"

"surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life"

etc chants like these with awesome piano accompaniement, practiced for hours, performed during worship.

back then i questioned like crazy.

now i look to other ideas about reality but keep second guessing myself, drawn back to saying yes jesus, yes love peace yes jesus truth light holy way blessed love divine peace love! I am sorry for turning on you blessed jesus love light comfort!

and i feel it deep down, just like the witness says (every second jesus is minestering to your heart, trying to show you gods truth)

but upon my analysis gods truth is sickening.

gods truth involves hell, suffering, a flawed creation. nothing in life matters, only jesus, everything else is a trick of the devil that could end us up in hell.

and yet, we have a mind with the capacity to say "it could all be in our minds"

so we are left with a vision of god that gave us a mind that was capable if used enough to question everything and find flaws in his plan. and this is why he values faith.

this describes a god that doesnt seem to understand us.

if a friend says "you know i was raised this way, but now i look at the world and i am doubting, i think we made the whole thing up"

i say "yeah man, thats how life is, we can never be sure of anything"

god created me to say stuff like that

but god himself is like "no, it told you what to do, i gave you a "fair chance" and now you are gonna pay"

i feel compassionate to forgive people for their mistakes. god says "vengeance is mine"

it seems like god created beings that think differently thatn he does. nevertheless his plan is to be understood by us withoour reason. (it is reasonable to reject reason and go with the heart just beczase we feel in our hearts that jesus is calling us, its not nice, it doesnt make sense, but in a dynamic where reasonable analysis cancels the posibility of yahweh out, and the only thing pulling us back into his game is the heart vibration "knowing jesus is real" then it is reasonable based on the premise to reject the world and pick up the cross.

this is what christians are doing. this is what they do. some of the m dont realize it, and they think reasonably in other matters, but when it comes to god, being holy, and being godly, they reject all kinds of worldly things, even accepting a being that creates other beings, and puts them in a reality where they could potentially eternally end themselves up in a place called hell.

christians put the bnlame for this on humans. but in the end, we arent the alpha and omega, god is.
