what's the best RAW book to start with?

hi there. I'm new to RA and very fascinated by his ideas. Can anyone recommend a book best to start with, one that's most comprehensive of his ideas and most condensced with information, a kind of autobiographical browse of his life and a summary of his other books?

The first one I read was "Illuminatus Trilogy", not knowing anything about Bob when I got it. This book was off-handedly recommended to me by some geek I was chatting with in the sci-fi section of a mall bookshop who saw the Masonic ring I was wearing. Three years later I read Cosmic Trigger, not realizing that this was the same man who wrote Illuminatus. After that I was determined to read everything else I could find, within months I had read just about everything in print.

So I guess Cosmic Trigger vol.1 would be a good start, but I agree with Phil. Whatever ends up in your hands is the best start.

That's like four different questions. I'm going to add to the confusion (and discord!) and suggest THE ILLUMINATI PAPERS as most condensed and comprehensive, very underrated, and one of my favorites.

I also like the DINGER'S KITTY recommendation.

wow, thanx fellas! Yes, synchronysities shall light the way, while on the side trail i'll focus on finding the cosmic triggers (seems to get the majority vote) as well as paying attention for other works recommended here. Much appreciated, and looking forward to his trip.

Out of all his books, I have re-read Illuminati papers more than any of them. I totally forgot about this one since it's not on my bookshelf anymore (I really wish I knew what happened to it cause I don't like the format of the new Ronin edition, the larger format of the first few editions were much more to my liking, guess I need to get a used copy somewhere).

Illuminati Papers has "Ten Good Reasons to Get Out of Bed in the Morning" which is my favorite short piece by RAW. And the "Hey, man, are you using only half your brain?" pieces are brilliant as well. While I would vote Cosmic Trigger I as the place to start, this one would do nicely too. And I agree - the original oversize edition is much more pleasant to read.

The first RAW book I bought was the Illuminatus Trilogy! There it sat on my shelves for years. Later on when I was having issues with life a friend who'd just finished Prometheus Rising suggested it so I picked that up. After I put 2 and 3 together I realized that I'd been missing out for years now on this man's writing and it'd been right there on my shelf. After that I picked up Quantum Psychology since Shroedinger's Cat was out at the store. Went back in to find Shroedinger's Cat again and it was out again but that time I picked up Cosmic Trigger I. Honestly I'm glad I came upon this later on because at that point I knew about RAW's multifacitedness and that book hit me like a crossbow bolt through the chest. The Cosmic Trigger's are by far my favorites but I think that's because of the process I went through getting to them and if I'd started with them I most likely wouldn't have continued my search for more RAW books, much less the ones he recommended in his writings that spurred him along his path in life.

But yeah, whichever book fate puts into your hands first will probably be about as good as any ;) If you're down right now, Promethus Rising might help, if you want social commentary on the last century through the form of an auto-biography of a man who did a lot in life then go with the Cosmic Trigger's, if you want a fiction book that'll make you think you're either part of the story or might in fact just be dreaming your existence go with Illuminatus, if you want a really interesting dive into psychology go for the Quantum ones :)

          Bon voyage!! :)

i'll cast my vote for Illuminati Papers as offering probably the best general overview of the diversity of our man's interests. it also has a lasting significance for me in that the piece on Finnegans Wake provoked me, more than any other single source, to get interested in Joyce.

Really, I think the Illuminati Trilogy is the place to start. It's the one that really made his reputation, where so many of his ideas were first presented.

Most of the later books people have mentioned riff on ideas, characters, and even plotlines from the Illuminati Trilogy, and I think would be much more rewarding reads if you start with the Trilogy first.

On the other hand, since that's the order I read them in, I can't really say what it's like to experience his books in a different sequence.

    Autobiographical? Cosmic Trigger,
But I suggest you start by Prometheus Rising, you will be transformed.

I started with Prometheus Rising and I'm glad I did. His non-fiction books tend to have a LOT of overlap.

Yes and no, IMO. (hey that rhymes)

While I'd agree that there is a lot of overlap on the surface, a closer examination shows a huge amount of subtle differences. I could read the same essay by RAW 4 different times and pick up a different variety of nuances each time. By the same token, I've read say three differnent essays (and maybe listened to 2 more talks) on the jumping jesus phenomenon and each one, while discussing the same theme, has an astonishing amount of variance and new information from piece to piece...

Like many other prolific authors, Bob's writing underwent numerous stages expressing peaks and valleys and all-time lows. IMO, the following books frame Bob's peak era as an author. This era spans eleven years, a formidable breadth by any standard:

The Illuminatus! Trilogy (1975) (with Robert Shea)
          The Eye in the Pyramid
          The Golden Apple
          Leviathan
Cosmic Trigger I: Final Secret of the Illuminati (1977)
Neuropolitics (1978) (with Timothy Leary and George Koopman)
The Game of Life (1979) (with Timothy Leary)
          The Illuminati Papers (1980)
          Schrödinger's Cat trilogy (1980-1981)
          The Universe Next Door
          The Trick Top Hat
          The Homing Pigeon
          Masks of the Illuminati (1981)
          The Historical Illuminatus Chronicles
          The Earth Will Shake (1982)
          The Widow's Son (1985)
          Nature's God (1991)
Right Where You Are Sitting Now (1983)
          Prometheus Rising (1983)
          The New Inquisition (1986)

I'm not saying the books he wrote after 1986 were bad or without merit or value. It's just that I have noticed a consistent rehashing of the seminal seed ideas that sprouted with such fury and compassion during the previous eleven years. I remain astonished by the duration of this peak era, which matches the cycle of Sun spot peaks and storms. Coincidence ? I don't think so. To me, Bob exemplified the archetype of Prometheus who stole fire from the gods to set aflame the minds of the people.
